Stairs & Handrailing
We craft bespoke staircases, from simple, rustic straight flights to elegant spirals and intricate wreathed geometric designs.
Our Continuous Wreathed Handrailing is made entirely by hand using traditional techniques, which results in a more graceful form and is often the most cost-effective approach.
Some staircases are created using ancient joinery methods and historical designs, like the Medieval Farmhouse example below.
Oak stair for extension to mediaeval farmhouse
This stair was designed to complement one of the extensions we designed and built in east Kent.
The stair uses carriage beams to support the treads and risers. Note that the balusters are the same thickness as the handrail – all designed based on historic records including the newel cap, balusters and handrail. Note the way the balusters are the same thickness as the handrail base and string cap. We have observed these are typical of the care in design carried out in this period.

44mm handrail system
This 44mm handrail system uses a 90deg bend, a ramp, a straight piece and a jig for drilling, to fit most stair configurations. This example was fitted in a double cart gated aisled oak barn as part of a larger development we helped Julian Swift Period House Renovations to design and build.
