Exterior Joinery
External joinery is subject to a variety of weather conditions we experience in the British Isles. Because of this, the timber used, the mouldings and joints, the adhesives employed, and the finishes applied all need careful consideration. History shows that properly maintained timber windows and doors can last for hundreds of years. Conversely, a lack of maintenance or knowledge in design and construction is usually the reason for decay.
“…a product that will last for decades or even centuries.”
We design and construct joinery using longstanding traditional methods while utilising the latest preservatives, coatings, and adhesives where appropriate. The result is a product that will last for decades or even centuries.
Our exterior joinery is designed according to the building’s specific needs. A conservation project requires precise replication and a thoughtful integration with the historic fabric. Other projects may necessitate an authentic traditional appearance combined with modern warm edge, low sightline glazing, and other systems.
Orangery - North-West Kent Designed and made for Julian Swift
The existing joinery had been patched up and it was no longer clear exactly what had been there. Fortunately an early photo enabled us to redesign closer to the original.
Note the box gutter, which was lined with lead.

Oak Heavy Ovolo Mullioned Windows
With bespoke steel casements and fasteners.
Within the brick exterior of this 1980’s modern house is a traditional oak framed structure built to ancient principles. The modern windows had heavy timber storm proof casements that cut out the light significantly. The Heavy Ovolo window with its steel casement and low sight line glazing increase the light influx by an estimated 50% or more compared to UPVC.
